We dispatch Derby from our West Haven yard, about a 20-minute drive from our West Haven yard via Route 34. Derby is the smallest city in Connecticut by area — sitting at the confluence of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers, with a dense urban-residential character and post-industrial heritage. Most of our Derby work runs roll-offs for renovation projects on the older urban housing, multi-family unit turnovers in the dense downtown blocks, and the occasional commercial site along the Route 34 corridor. Over 16,000 dumpster drops and junk-removal jobs since 2014, across Fairfield, New Haven, and Hartford counties. This page is what I tell Derby homeowners and contractors when they call.

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Derby?

Roll-off dumpster rentals in Derby use up-front pricing. The price doesn't change between Downtown Derby and Naugatuck River corridor — size sets the rate, not the address. The base rate covers delivery, pickup, dumping at a licensed transfer station, and a 7-day rental window. We don't surcharge for "longer driveways" or "harder access," and the Derby dispatch from our West Haven yard is built into the base rate, not added on top.

Four sizes cover almost every Derby project. The 10-yard runs $447, right for small bath remodels or concrete-and-dirt loads. The 15-yard runs $547, the sweet spot for single-room renovations and full garage cleanouts. The 20-yard runs $647, the most-common pick for whole-house decluttering, single-layer roof tear-offs, and contractor work. The 30/40-yard runs $899 — contractor-tier for full additions, multi-room renovations, and commercial buildouts. Full pricing reference at How Pricing Works.

What size dumpster do I need for Derby projects?

Derby's housing stock is dense urban — multi-family triple-deckers, two-families, tighter single-family lots in the residential pockets like Hawthorne Heights, and a compact downtown with mixed-use buildings. The work splits between renovation roll-offs, multi-family turnovers, and commercial work.

10-yard ($447) for single-bath remodels, single-unit cleanouts in multi-family buildings, or concrete-and-dirt loads.

15-yard ($547) for single-room kitchen renos in two-families, garage clear-outs, and basement cleanouts in older Hawthorne Heights stock.

20-yard ($647) for whole-floor renovations, single-layer roof tear-offs on the older urban housing, multi-unit estate cleanouts.

30/40-yard ($899) for contractor work on multi-floor renovations and Route 34 commercial buildouts.

Where can I put a dumpster in Derby?

Derby's urban density makes placement the recurring conversation. Downtown Derby blocks are tight — many properties don't have private driveways at all, and street-side placement triggers the city permit conversation. The Hawthorne Heights and Pittsfield residential pockets have more typical suburban driveways. East Derby properties along the Housatonic River side have varied access — some long driveways, some tight shared-access situations. We back-set cans toward the street where driveways are constricted. For multi-family properties, coordinate placement with the property owner before our arrival.

For lawn placement, we put planks under the wheels. Minor turf compression is normal. We don't recommend lawn drops if it's been raining — soft ground doesn't hold a loaded box. Snap a photo of the driveway entrance from the street and text it to (203) 219-8855 if you're not sure about clearance or approach.

How fast can you deliver a dumpster in Derby?

Same-day works for Derby reliably — we're about a 20-minute drive from our West Haven yard via Route 34, one of the closer dispatches we make. If you call before 11 AM and the size you want is on the lot, we can almost always drop the can the same day. After 11 AM or on weekends, next-day is standard. Delivery and pickup windows fall between 8 AM and 4 PM — we do our best to accommodate earlier or later requests when the schedule allows. Call (203) 219-8855 — live Mon–Fri 8 AM – 4 PM, AI assistant covers after-hours and weekends.

What about the Derby Transfer Station?

Derby's Public Works yard at 49 Coon Hollow Road (203-736-1468) handles resident drop-off, Mon–Fri 7 AM–3:30 PM and Sat 8 AM–3 PM per derbyct.gov. Commercial-vs-residential rate distinctions and current resident-permit requirements come from the Public Works office. Derby's small geography (only 5 sq mi) means the city runs leaner facilities than larger NH County towns.

For Derby residents weighing self-haul against a Grizzly roll-off, the math runs roughly the same as in any New Haven County town: a self-haul is your time, your truck, and the per-load fees the town sets at the gate. A 10-yard at $447 base delivered to your Derby driveway, picked up, and dumped covers everything in one shot. The roll-off wins fast for anything over a couple of pickup-truck loads.

The transfer station does not accept hazardous waste — paint, solvents, oil, pesticides, lithium batteries. Those go through CT DEEP collection days.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Derby, CT?

Private property — your driveway, your private parking pad: no permit required. Public street, sidewalk, or city right-of-way: yes — obtain a Street Use Permit from the Derby Police Department before delivery (the city routes dumpster-permit applications through the Police Department per derbyct.gov). The Building Official (203-736-1481) can answer broader scope questions. Derby's downtown density means street-permit cases come up more often than in larger New Haven County towns — many downtown buildings don't have usable private driveways. Plan a few business days for permit processing. State route placement along Route 34, Route 8, or Route 188 needs a CT DOT Encroachment Permit instead.

Derby sorts cleanly into named areas, each with its own driveway shapes and project mix.

  • Downtown Derby — dense urban core, mixed-use, frequent permit conversations for street placement
  • East Derby — Housatonic River side, varied access, mix of single-family and multi-family
  • Hawthorne Heights — residential pocket, tighter single-family lots, suburban renovation work
  • Pittsfield — north-east residential neighborhood, mid-century housing
  • West Derby — west-side residential extending toward the Ansonia line
  • Naugatuck River corridor — river-side properties, post-industrial heritage, occasional commercial sites

If your part of Derby isn't on the list, call — we likely already serve it.

Derby service area & nearby towns

We dispatch into all Derby neighborhoods from our West Haven yard. For projects in the surrounding New Haven County towns, we run the same up-front roll-off pricing and the same same-day-before-11-AM cadence:

  • Shelton, CT — south neighbor across the Housatonic, Tier 2 Fairfield
  • Ansonia, CT — north neighbor [out of current service area]
  • Beacon Falls, CT — north via Route 8, fellow Tier 3 NH
  • Woodbridge, CT — east via Route 34, Tier 2 NH

Derby pricing tracks the rest of our service area. We don't zone-price within Derby; we don't surcharge for the dispatch from West Haven. Same up-front rates as our Connecticut roll-off rentals statewide.

What customers in Derby are saying

  • Y
Spectacular service, even during Covid! First, a human answered their phone immediately and was clear and courteous. How rare these days! I got an appointment for next day! As promised, received a call that crew was on its way. My mother gave me last minute permission to move a fridge, not part of original request. So I had to tell the poor guys upon arrival that there was a surprise fridge move, two in fact, one removed, one moved within house. Crew didn't flinch. Then one fridge move required its doors AND house door to come off, which they achieved with impressive skill. I'm a manager in my work life and can say their professionalism was superb. Also, important for environment, the company claims to recycle materials. A+ on every level.

Amazing experience! I would definitely hire them again! Every interaction with this company, from setting up the appointment with Justin, and then having to move it up, because my long distance home movers moved up their delivery day at the last minute, and to the appointment itself, has been a wonderful, and positive experience. When we had to change my delivery window at the last minute, Justin was incredibly helpful and accommodating. And the amazing movers, Eric and Mike, "Big Mike", were so wonderful, professional, helpful, kind, and did excellent work.

It's spring cleaning time! Who am I going to call? the same great company I called 3 times before...grizzly junk pros! I have found these guys to be experts in moving large bulky items. They are hard workers, honest, fair and extremely efficient. I won't take a chance on any other company because I know what to expect from this one. They've done my cellar, things inside the house and now will call them for cleaning out the attic. The areas I've called them for aren't easy to maneuver in...amazing how they adapt to the job at hand.

Derby dumpster rental FAQs

How fast can you deliver a dumpster to Derby?
Same-day delivery is standard if you call before 11 AM. We're about 20 minutes from our West Haven yard via Route 34 — one of our closest dispatches. After 11 AM, next-day is standard. Call (203) 219-8855 — live Mon–Fri 8 AM – 4 PM, AI assistant covers after-hours and weekends.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in downtown Derby?
Often yes — downtown Derby blocks frequently lack private driveways, which means street-side placement triggers a Derby Public Works permit. Plan a few business days for permit processing. For Hawthorne Heights or Pittsfield residential, private-property placement usually doesn't need a permit.
Can a roll-off fit on a downtown Derby block without a driveway?
Sometimes — depends on the block. Tight downtown blocks may need street placement (permit required) or a Grizzly Bag instead of a roll-off. Bags fit in tighter side-yard spaces where roll-offs don't — see /grizzly-bags.
Do you handle multi-family turnover cleanouts in Derby?
Yes — common Derby work. Triple-deckers and two-families turn over regularly; we handle single-unit cleanouts (junk-removal crew) and multi-unit transitions (roll-off plus crew). For property managers running multiple buildings, see /commercial-dumpster-rental-for-property-managers.
What about commercial work along Route 34?
Standard work. Route 34 commercial in Derby runs mostly 20-yard and 30/40-yard cans for retail tenant turnovers and small-commercial fitouts. State-route placement may need a CT DOT Encroachment Permit — call (203) 219-8855 to talk through.
What's the difference between Grizzly Junk Pros and Stamford Junk Pros?
Same company. Grizzly Junk Pros is the dba of Stamford Junk Pros LLC. We started in Stamford in 2014 and operate across Fairfield, New Haven, and Hartford counties from depots in Stamford and West Haven. Same team, same number — (203) 219-8855.
