Learn More About Grizzly BagsWe rent roll-off dumpsters across Connecticut from two depots: Stamford for Fairfield County and lower New York, West Haven for New Haven, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, and the East CT shoreline. Over 16,000 dumpster drops and junk-removal jobs since 2014. Up-front pricing — $447 to $899 by size, no quote calls needed for the standard cases. This page is the master reference for our roll-off rental service. Pricing table below pulls from our canonical pricing constant; town pages handle the local permit + transfer station specifics.
A roll-off rental is the right tool when the project runs across days, the volume is bigger than 8 cubic yards, you have driveway space, and you (or your crew) can do the loading. Kitchen renos, roof tear-offs, garage cleanouts, deck demos, basement clear-outs, contractor jobs — all standard roll-off work. If the volume fits in a single Grizzly Bag (8 yd³) or a junk-removal pickup, those are usually cheaper; we'll tell you that on the call rather than upsell you into a roll-off you don't need.
What does a roll-off dumpster rental cost in Connecticut?
Up-front pricing by container size, published below. The rate covers delivery, pickup, dumping at a licensed transfer station, the 7-day rental window, and a per-size weight allowance. We don't surcharge for "longer driveways" or "harder access" — placement on private property is included.
What size dumpster do I need?
Match the size to the volume — and account for weight on heavy-debris jobs. The pricing table above has the included weight cap per size; the math below shows what fits.
10-yard ($447) holds about three pickup-truck loads. Right-sized for: a single-bath remodel, a half-garage cleanout, a small deck tear-down, or any concrete / dirt / brick / asphalt-shingle load. Heavy materials hit the weight cap before they fill the box. The 0.5-ton included weight on the 10-yard is the working floor; clean fill, broken concrete, and brick run small.
15-yard ($547) holds about four to five pickup-truck loads. The sweet spot for most homeowners. Full garage cleanout, basement cleanout in an older cape, mid-size kitchen or bath renovation, attic clear-out before listing. If you're not sure which size, this is the safe pick. 1-ton included weight handles mixed renovation debris cleanly.
20-yard ($647) holds about six pickup-truck loads. Right-sized for: whole-house decluttering, single-layer asphalt roof tear-off on a typical CT colonial, mid-size renovation generating drywall and framing, or a full estate cleanout where the contents are mostly furniture (light, voluminous). 2-ton included weight. Roof-debris reality: a typical 2,000 sq ft home generates 3-4 tons of asphalt-shingle waste — roughly $200-400 in overweight charges at $0.10/lb beyond the 2-ton cap, and total stays below the 30/40-yard's $899 base for most homes.
30/40-yard ($899) is contractor tier. Right-sized for: a full gut-rehab, major addition, multi-room renovation, commercial site clearout, or roof tear-off on a larger home with two layers of shingles. 3-ton included weight. Most homeowners don't need this size; most contractors on a serious project do.
If you're stuck between sizes, size up. The price difference between a 15-yard and a 20-yard ($100) is almost always less than the cost of a second haul if you fill the smaller one and still have stuff left.
Dedicated size guides — click any size in the pricing table above to jump to its full page, or pick from the list: 10-yard guide · 15-yard guide · 20-yard guide · 30/40-yard guide. Each one covers what fits, weight ceiling specifics for that size, common customers, and FAQs at depth.
Roof tear-off math — why heavy debris changes the size choice
Asphalt shingles run heavy. A typical 2,000 sq ft single-layer tear-off generates 3-4 tons of debris. On a 20-yard ($647 base, 2 tons included), that's 1-2 tons over → $200-400 in overweight passthrough at $0.10/lb. Total: $850-1,050 — still typically under the 30/40-yard's $899 base for the single-layer case. For two-layer tear-offs or homes over 2,500 sq ft, size up to the 30/40. Two layers double the haul weight; the 3-ton cap on the 30/40 absorbs most homes' single-layer math without overage.
We pass through transfer-station fees at the actual rate ($0.10/lb, no markup). The cost-passthrough policy is documented at How Pricing Works — operator-confirmed, not a hidden margin.
Where can I put a roll-off in Connecticut?
The standard placement is the customer's driveway, with the heavy end of the can over a flat hard surface. Asphalt driveways take roll-offs without an issue. Paver driveways and stamped concrete need extra care — tell us upfront and we'll stage 2x12 boards under the wheels and the heavy end. Boards on request, specify when you book.
What we look for on the placement call:
- Vertical clearance — about 22 feet for a loaded delivery truck. Mature trees on older CT streets (Long Ridge Road, Newfield Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, Federal Road) are the most common constraint.
- Width — most CT driveways take a roll-off, but the truck needs a straight pull-in. Tight Shippan / Cove / Old Greenwich coastal driveways and narrow downtown blocks are the recurring tight spots.
- Slope — steeply pitched driveways (parts of North Stamford, Westport's Saugatuck side, Hill section in Waterbury) need the can placed across the slope, not down it.
- Overhead wires and gates — power lines and gate arms are the two surprises that come up most. If you're not sure about clearance, snap a photo of the driveway entrance from the street and text it to (203) 219-8855 before delivery.
For lawn placement, we put planks under the wheels. Minor turf compression is normal; the lawn recovers. We don't recommend lawn drops if the project will span more than a couple weeks or it's been raining — soft ground doesn't hold a loaded box.
Do I need a permit for a roll-off dumpster?
Three cases, three answers:
- Private property — driveway, lawn, your own parking pad: no permit. That's the vast majority of residential rentals.
- Public street, sidewalk, or town right-of-way: yes — a Street Use (Obstruction) Permit from the town's Engineering or Public Works department. Fees and lead time vary by town — Stamford runs a few business days through the Engineering Bureau; Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven each have their own fee schedule. Check the relevant town page for specifics: Stamford permits, Bridgeport permits, Hartford permits, New Haven permits.
- State route placement: a CT DOT Encroachment Permit (instead of, not in addition to, the town permit). Applies if your property is on a state route and the can would sit in the state right-of-way. Rare for residential; common for commercial sites along US-1, Route 7, Route 8, etc.
We don't pull town permits for customers — confirm placement with your town first, then book the delivery. For Westchester County NY rentals, county and municipal permit requirements vary by jurisdiction — call (203) 219-8855 and we'll talk through it.
What can't go in a roll-off dumpster?
The short list, with workarounds for each:
- Liquids and chemicals — paint, oil, solvents, pesticides, household cleaners. Route through CT DEEP's hazardous-waste channels or your town's hazmat day.
- Tires — $50 per tire if loaded (our overage fee covers the disposal logistics).
- Batteries, any kind (car, lithium, alkaline). Lithium especially — transfer stations have refused entire loads over a single power-tool battery.
- Asbestos-containing materials — specialized hauler required.
- CFC-containing appliances (refrigerators, freezers, ACs, dehumidifiers) — refrigerant must be removed by a certified tech first. $50 per item if loaded. Most customers book those as junk-removal pickups instead.
- Mattresses — fine, but we route through CT's Bye Bye Mattress program ($50 each if loaded).
For statewide hazardous-waste guidance: CT DEEP materials management.

Roll-offs for commercial customers
More than half of our roll-off rentals are commercial — general contractors running kitchen / bath / addition jobs, roofers on tear-offs, demo contractors and excavators. Same up-front pricing as the residential rates above (no contractor surcharge, no volume discount), same depot dispatch, same 7-day rental window. What's different is operational: recurring delivery patterns, multi-can rotations across job sites, certificates of insurance for project files, and weight-aware sizing for heavy debris (asphalt shingles, concrete, brick). Industry-specific guidance at Commercial Dumpster Rental, with dedicated pages for contractors, roofers, and demo contractors.
How does a roll-off compare to junk removal, a Grizzly Bag, or demolition?
Four services, four different jobs:
- Roll-off dumpster when the project runs across days, the volume is bigger than 8 cubic yards, you can do the loading, and you have driveway space. $447–$899 base by size.
- Full-service junk removal when you don't want to load it yourself, the volume is small to medium (under a half-truckload), the access is awkward, or the items are mostly heavy bulky pieces. $145 minimum to $795 full truckload, by truck space used.
- Grizzly Dumpster Bag when the job fits in 8 cubic yards or less, the driveway can't host a roll-off for a week, or the project is staged across weekends. $59 with delivery, $269 collection, $299 combo.
- Demolition when there's a standalone outbuilding to tear down — shed, detached garage, deck, hot tub, pool, fence. Crew + saws, custom-quoted on site, full disposal included. Starting $200–$3,000+ by category.
If the project shape isn't obvious, call (203) 219-8855 and we'll point you at the cheaper option.
