Westport is the Tier 1 town where the cultural identity matters as much as the operational logistics. About 28,000 people. The Saugatuck River bisects the town, with downtown Main Street and Saugatuck on the west side and most of the residential stock — Compo, Old Hill, Greens Farms, Coleytown — on the east. Westport Country Playhouse, Levitt Pavilion, the redesigned Westport Library, Compo Beach, and Sherwood Island State Park all sit within Westport's roughly 22 square miles. We've dropped roll-offs in Greens Farms estate driveways, behind Main Street retail, in tight Saugatuck side streets near the marinas, and on Compo Beach Road shoreline properties. Over 16,000 dumpster drops and junk-removal jobs since 2014, across Fairfield, New Haven, and Hartford counties.

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Westport?

Roll-off dumpster rentals in Westport use up-front pricing. Same prices as the rest of lower Fairfield County — no zone pricing between Saugatuck and Greens Farms, between a Compo waterfront estate cleanout and an Old Hill kitchen reno. Size sets the rate.

The base rate covers delivery, pickup, dumping at the licensed transfer station, and a 7-day rental window. We don't surcharge for "longer driveways" or "harder access" — including on the long Greens Farms estate driveways or the tight Saugatuck side streets near the marinas.

For full-service junk removal (we do the loading), pricing is by truck space:

  • Minimum Load — $145. A few small items.
  • 1/4 Truckload — $295. Contents of a small bedroom or a few bulky items.
  • 1/2 Truckload — $455. Contents of a small apartment or several large furniture items.
  • 3/4 Truckload — $655. Contents of a large apartment or a small home.
  • Full Truckload — $795. Full home cleanout or major renovation debris (about 20 cubic yards).

Final pricing is based on actual truck space used and is confirmed before removal begins. Full 13-tier breakdown at How Junk Removal Pricing Works.

What size dumpster do I need for Westport projects?

Westport's housing splits across a few patterns: pre-war estate stock concentrated in Greens Farms and parts of Old Hill (heavier per-yard demo), mid-century and newer single-family across Coleytown, Compo, and most of Old Hill (moderate demo), older shoreline single-family along Compo Beach and Saugatuck Shores (varies by era), and mixed-use commercial in Saugatuck and downtown Main Street.

10-yard ($447) holds about three pickup-truck loads. Right-sized for: a single-bath remodel anywhere in Westport, a small Saugatuck condo punch-list, a half-garage cleanout, or any concrete-or-dirt-only load. Heavy materials hit the weight cap before they fill the box.

15-yard ($547) holds about four to five pickup-truck loads. The most common size for single-room renovations across Westport. Full garage cleanout, basement cleanout in older Old Hill stock, mid-size kitchen or bath reno, attic clear-out before listing the house. Older Greens Farms and Old Hill plaster-and-lath demo is heavier than newer construction — size up if working pre-war.

20-yard ($647) holds about six pickup-truck loads. Right-sized for: a whole-house decluttering before a sale, a single-layer asphalt roof tear-off on a typical Westport colonial, a mid-size renovation generating drywall and framing waste, a master suite addition demo, or a full estate cleanout where the contents are mostly furniture. Roof debris runs heavy: a typical 2,000 sq ft home generates 3-4 tons of asphalt-shingle waste, which means roughly $200-400 in overweight charges at $0.10/lb beyond the 2-ton included weight on a 20-yard — and total stays below the 30/40-yard's $899 base for most homes. Size up to 30/40-yard only for roofs over 2,500 sq ft or two-layer tear-offs.

30/40-yard ($899) is contractor-tier. Right-sized for: a Greens Farms gut-rehab, a slate-roof tear-off on older estate stock, a multi-room renovation, a full-floor commercial demo on Main Street or in Saugatuck, or a multi-week residential gut-rehab project. Pre-war estate construction with stone foundations, plaster-and-lath walls, and slate roofs generates heavier per-yard debris than newer construction — sizing up isn't optional, it's load-weight reality.

If you're stuck between sizes, especially on older Greens Farms or Old Hill stock, size up.

Where can I put a dumpster in Westport?

Most Westport residential placements are private driveway. Westport lots are larger than what you see in Stamford or Norwalk's denser sections — driveways generally accommodate any size with placement room to spare. The constraints that come up:

  • Vertical clearance from mature trees. Greens Farms, parts of Coleytown, and the older Old Hill blocks have driveways running past 50- to 100-year-old canopy. Walk the approach if photos look marginal.
  • Sloped driveways winding to hilltop houses. Some Old Hill and Coleytown properties sit on elevated lots; cross-place the can on grade.
  • Stonework and paver surfaces. Higher-end Westport driveways often have granite curbing, paver fields, or stamped concrete. Pavers and stamped concrete should always be planked. We bring 2x12 boards on request.
  • Beachside Avenue and Saugatuck Shores private access. Beachside Avenue is gated; Saugatuck Shores has peninsula-style access. Both require coordination before delivery.
  • Tight Saugatuck side streets. Saugatuck (the neighborhood west of the river) has older residential blocks with narrower driveways from the historically Italian fishing-village era. A 10-yard or 15-yard fits where a 20-yard pinches.
  • Compo Beach shoreline placements. Coastal-property placement walks include riparian setbacks and septic infrastructure on older properties.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Westport?

Three cases, three answers.

Private property — driveway, lawn, your own parking pad: no permit required. That's the case for most Westport residential rentals.

Public street, sidewalk, or town right-of-way: yes — Westport's "Dumpster Permit on Town Property." Issued by Westport Department of Public Works at 110 Myrtle Avenue, Town Hall Room 210, (203) 341-1120, Mon–Fri 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Specific fee not published online; call DPW for current schedule. Common cases: Saugatuck restaurant and retail fitouts (limited driveway), Main Street downtown commercial work, dense Saugatuck side streets where the driveway can't fit a 20-yard.

State route placement: a Connecticut DOT Encroachment Permit instead. Post Road East and Post Road West (US-1) are state-maintained. Placements in the state right-of-way require the CT DOT permit instead of (not in addition to) the Town permit. Common for commercial sites with frontage directly on Post Road.

Where does Westport's trash go? Westport Transfer Station

For Westport residents who'd rather drive a load to the town facility instead of renting a roll-off, here's the official setup. Westport's permit model is unique — free for residents.

  • Address: 300 Sherwood Island Connector, Westport, CT 06880.
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Saturday 7:00 AM – noon. Closed Sunday.
  • Phone (DPW general): (203) 341-1120.
  • Resident pricing: FREE for Westport residents disposing of acceptable trash and recycling within the maximum bag limit. Must show proof of residency (WP sticker).
  • Dump tickets: required for larger loads, some appliances, and tires. Purchased at Town Hall, DPW Office Room 210.
  • Appliance recycling fee: $15 per appliance for air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, dryers, freezers, microwaves, ovens, ranges, refrigerators, stoves, washers, water heaters, and similar items.
  • Hazardous waste: routed through Westport's Household Hazardous Waste Program separate from the Transfer Station — check westportct.gov for the schedule.

When Westport homeowners are weighing self-haul to the Transfer Station vs. renting a roll-off: free residential drop-off with a WP sticker is hard to beat for small loads. A 10-yard roll-off from us is $447 base for renovation projects. Roll-off wins for renovation projects, multi-day cleanouts, anything over a few pickup-truck loads — and the dump-ticket pricing for larger Transfer Station loads makes the roll-off math even better at scale.

For commercial loads — contractors on a Westport job site — the Transfer Station's resident-only pricing doesn't apply; specific commercial rates aren't published. A roll-off (or a junk-removal crew) is the right tool.

What can't go in the dumpster?

Same Connecticut rules apply across all our service area:

  • Liquids and chemicals (paint, oil, solvents, pesticides, household cleaners). These need to go to a CT DEEP HHW collection day or Westport's Household Hazardous Waste Program.
  • Tires. $50 per tire if loaded into our roll-off (overage fee for disposal logistics). The Transfer Station accepts tires with dump tickets.
  • Batteries, any kind (car, lithium, alkaline). Lithium especially — transfer stations refuse loads over a single power-tool battery.
  • Asbestos-containing materials. Specialized hauler required.
  • CFC-containing appliances (refrigerators, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers). $50 per item if loaded into our roll-off; the Westport Transfer Station charges $15/item recycling fee for residents.
  • Mattresses. Fine in our roll-offs — we route them through Connecticut's Bye Bye Mattress program.

How fast can you deliver a dumpster in Westport?

Drive times from our Woodchuck Road depot in North Stamford via I-95:

  • Saugatuck (closest, near I-95 Exit 17): ~18–20 minutes.
  • Downtown Westport (Main Street, Post Road): ~20–22 minutes.
  • Compo Beach / Compo South: ~22 minutes.
  • Old Hill: ~22 minutes.
  • Greens Farms (near Exit 18): ~22–25 minutes.
  • Coleytown (northern, more interior): ~22–25 minutes.

Call before 11 AM and the size you want is on the lot — same-day is reliable. After 11 AM or on weekends, next-day is the standard. Delivery and pickup windows fall between 8 AM and 4 PM — we do our best to accommodate earlier or later requests when the schedule allows. Call (203) 219-8855 — live Mon–Fri 8 AM – 4 PM, AI assistant covers after-hours and weekends.

For multi-week Greens Farms gut-rehabs or Saugatuck commercial demos that need swap rotations, we plan the cadence with the GC at booking.

Should I rent a dumpster or hire junk removal in Westport?

Two services, two different jobs.

Rent a dumpster when: you have time, the volume is large (more than half a truckload), the project will generate waste over multiple days (renovation, deck demo, gradual estate cleanout, multi-week commercial demo), you have driveway space, and you don't mind doing the loading. Cost-per-cubic-yard is lowest at the 20- and 30/40-yard sizes.

Hire junk removal when: you want it gone today, you don't want to load it yourself, the volume is small to medium, the access is awkward (third-floor Saugatuck condo walkup, no driveway), or it's mostly heavy items where the labor is the actual job. Truck-space pricing starts at $145 for a minimum load.

For Westport estate work specifically — Greens Farms or Compo shoreline — the right answer is often both. A 30/40-yard dumpster for the contents-out volume, plus a junk-removal crew for the heavy and awkward items the dumpster shouldn't or can't take (pianos, antique furniture, treadmills in basements with narrow stairs). We handle both halves.

The decision tree at Dumpster vs. Junk Removal in Connecticut walks the choice in detail.

How long can I keep a dumpster in Westport?

Standard rental is 7 days. If your project will run longer — multi-week Saugatuck restaurant demo, Greens Farms gut-rehab, multi-phase estate cleanout — call before the window closes and we'll extend or schedule a swap. Past the standard window without a heads-up, $15 per day. With a heads-up, we work it into the project plan.

Westport neighborhoods we serve

Westport's neighborhoods are sharp and recognizable. The Saugatuck River is the major geographic feature — downtown Westport (Main Street) sits on the west side of the river; most of the residential stock sits east of the river. Pricing is the same across all neighborhoods; the operational details vary.

  • Downtown Westport — Main Street commercial spine, Post Road, Westport Country Playhouse, Levitt Pavilion, Westport Library. Permit territory for retail and restaurant placements.
  • Saugatuck — west of the Saugatuck River, near I-95. Historically Italian fishing village identity. Riverside Avenue commercial-residential mix, marinas, restaurants, Saugatuck Shores peninsula.
  • Compo Beach — coastal residential along Long Island Sound. Compo Beach Road, Compo South. Older shoreline single-family stock with newer rebuilds.
  • Greens Farms — older estate area on the eastern side of Westport. Beachside Avenue's gated old-money waterfront. Greens Farms train station. Multi-acre estate stock.
  • Coleytown — northern Westport, near the Weston border. Larger lots, more wooded, residential.
  • Old Hill — central residential, near downtown. Mid-century plus older stock.

We also work the smaller adjacent areas: Long Lots (a corridor running through Greens Farms), Hillspoint (along the shoreline near Compo), Roseville Road, Bayberry Lane, and other smaller residential pockets. Sherwood Island State Park anchors the southern coastal edge between Compo and Saugatuck Shores. If your part of Westport isn't on the list above, call — we likely already serve it.

Common Westport project types

A decade of Westport dispatch sorts pretty cleanly:

  • Estate cleanouts and gut-rehabs. Concentrated in Greens Farms (estate-scale) and older Old Hill blocks. 30/40-yard with multi-week swap rotations is the typical project shape.
  • Kitchen and bath renovations. Steady volume across Old Hill, Coleytown, Compo, and downtown-adjacent residential. Most kitchen renos run a 15-yard; whole-floor or kitchen-plus-bath go 20-yard.
  • Pre-war gut-rehabs. Older Greens Farms estate properties between owners. Heavy debris by every measure — stone foundations, plaster-and-lath, slate roofs, original copper detail.
  • Slate roof tear-offs. Older Greens Farms and Old Hill estate stock has slate roofs at end-of-life. 30/40-yard at minimum.
  • Pool and pool-deck demos. Larger Westport lots have more in-ground pools than the smaller Tier 1 towns. Concrete and pavers in 10-yards for weight; lumber and landscape in 20-yards.
  • Master suite additions. A distinctive Westport pattern — empty-nester downsize-and-renovate where a master suite addition gets pulled and rebuilt on an older home. 20-yard handles most.
  • Saugatuck restaurant fitouts. Tenant turnover on Riverside Avenue, Bridge Street, the marina district. 20-yard for most; 30/40-yard if there's heavy demo.
  • Main Street and Post Road retail flips. Smaller commercial scope than Stamford or Greenwich's commercial corridors but real. Curbside placements with DPW permit.
  • Westport Country Playhouse / Levitt-area work. Less frequent but real — periodic facility upgrades and surrounding residential renovations.

General labor in Westport

Westport general-labor calls cluster around estate work, downsizing, and seasonal-furniture customers across Compo Beach, Greens Farms, and the Long Lots residential set. Two-man crew, $125/hour, 1-hour minimum. Common Westport calls: spring patio-furniture rotation from garage/basement to deck (and the reverse in fall), pre-listing furniture rearrangement before realtor photo shoots, curbside-to-inside delivery for heavy items dropped at the apron of a long driveway, and post-renovation crew help filling a dumpster. Same-day works when you call before 11 AM. Service page: general labor. Quote form: general labor quote.

What about Grizzly Dumpster Bags in Westport?

Grizzly Dumpster Bags fit the Westport gap between "too big for a junk-removal pickup" and "too small for a 10-yard roll-off." Buy the bag, fill it on your own time, call us when it's ready. No driveway commitment for days.

Westport-specific fits:

  • Tight Saugatuck side streets near the marinas.
  • Beachside Avenue private waterfront where a roll-off feels intrusive on the gated avenue.
  • Staged Greens Farms or Coleytown projects where debris comes out over a few weekends.
  • Compo Beach-area condo or smaller-property work.

The full breakdown is at Grizzly Dumpster Bags. If you're not sure whether a bag or a roll-off is right, mention what you're working on when you call (203) 219-8855 and we'll point you at the cheaper option.

Westport dumpster rental FAQs

How much is a 20-yard dumpster in Westport, CT?
$647 base. That covers delivery, pickup, dumping, and the standard 7-day rental window. The 20-yard fits about 6 pickup-truck loads — common for whole-house decluttering, single-layer roof tear-offs, deck demos, and mid-size renovations across Westport. Roof debris runs heavy — typical 2,000 sq ft home generates $200-400 in overweight charges at $0.10/lb beyond the 2-ton cap on a 20-yard. Size up to 30/40-yard for roofs over 2,500 sq ft or two-layer tear-offs.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my driveway in Westport?
No. Westport doesn't require a permit for a dumpster placed entirely on private property — your driveway, lawn, or parking pad. The Town's 'Dumpster Permit on Town Property' is required only when the dumpster sits on a public street, sidewalk, or town right-of-way. Apply through Westport DPW at 110 Myrtle Avenue (Town Hall, Room 210), phone (203) 341-1120, Mon–Fri 8:30 AM–4:30 PM.
Is the Westport Transfer Station free for residents?
Yes for standard household trash and recycling within the bag limit, with a Westport (WP) sticker showing proof of residency. The Transfer Station is at 300 Sherwood Island Connector, open Mon–Fri 7 AM–2:30 PM and Sat 7 AM–noon. Larger loads, some appliances, and tires require dump tickets purchased at Town Hall DPW Office (Room 210). Appliance recycling fee is $15 per item for ACs, dishwashers, dryers, freezers, microwaves, ovens, ranges, refrigerators, stoves, washers, water heaters, and similar items.
How fast can you deliver a dumpster to Westport?
Same-day for most Westport addresses if you call before 11 AM. Saugatuck (closest, near I-95 Exit 17) is about 18–20 minutes from our Woodchuck Road depot in North Stamford. Downtown Westport, Compo, and Old Hill are 20–22 minutes. Greens Farms (Exit 18) and Coleytown (northern) are 22–25 minutes. After 11 AM or on weekends, next-day is standard. Delivery and pickup windows fall between 8 AM and 4 PM — we do our best to accommodate earlier or later requests when the schedule allows. Call (203) 219-8855 — live Mon–Fri 8 AM – 4 PM, AI assistant covers after-hours and weekends.
Can a dumpster fit a Greens Farms or Beachside Avenue estate driveway?
Almost always — these are some of the longer, wider residential driveways in Westport. The constraints are vertical clearance from mature tree canopies on long approaches, slope on driveways winding up to hilltop properties, and (for Beachside Avenue specifically) the private gated nature of the avenue. Tell us 'this is on Beachside Avenue' or 'Greens Farms estate' at booking and we'll work the access into the plan.
What size dumpster do I need for a Westport kitchen reno?
Single-room kitchen reno in a typical Old Hill or Coleytown colonial: 15-yard ($547). Whole-floor or kitchen-plus-bath: 20-yard ($647). Older Greens Farms and Old Hill estate stock with plaster-and-lath construction generates heavier per-yard demo — size up to 20-yard for single-room or 30/40-yard for whole-floor on pre-war housing.
What about a roof tear-off in Westport? Single-layer or two-layer?
Single-layer asphalt on a typical Westport colonial: 20-yard ($647). Two-layer (older roof never fully stripped before the next layer): 30/40-yard ($899). Slate roofs on Greens Farms and older Old Hill estate stock are heavier than asphalt by a meaningful margin — slate goes 30/40-yard at minimum. Confirm the roof material and layer count before booking.
Can you handle estate cleanouts in older Greens Farms homes?
Most weeks. Greens Farms has the heaviest concentration of pre-war estate housing in Westport — multi-acre lots, slate roofs, plaster-and-lath, original copper detail. Full estate cleanout: 30/40-yard ($899) on a multi-week swap schedule, plus a junk-removal crew for heavy and awkward items the dumpster shouldn't take (pianos, antique furniture too valuable to dumpster). We handle both halves.
Can you place a dumpster on a Saugatuck Shores or Compo waterfront property?
Yes — coastal placements are routine. The placement walk includes confirmation of safe distance from seawall, bulkhead, or shoreline edge; for older properties, septic infrastructure to plan around. Saugatuck Shores has its own peninsula access character; Compo Beach Road and the surrounding shoreline blocks have similar coastal placement constraints. We've worked these blocks for over a decade.
Do you handle restaurant fitouts in Saugatuck or downtown Westport?
Yes. Saugatuck has steady restaurant turnover along Riverside Avenue, the marina district, and the Bridge Street area; downtown Main Street and Post Road see retail and restaurant work too. Most fitouts run a 20-yard ($647) for the demo phase. Curbside placements need a Westport DPW Dumpster Permit on Town Property.
What's the difference between Grizzly Junk Pros and Stamford Junk Pros?
Same company. Grizzly Junk Pros is the dba of Stamford Junk Pros LLC. We started in Stamford in 2014 and operate across Fairfield, New Haven, and Hartford counties (plus Westchester border towns) from our Stamford base. Same team, same number — (203) 219-8855.
What can't go in the dumpster?
No liquids, no chemicals, no paint, no propane tanks, no tires, no batteries (any kind), no asbestos, no medical waste, no CFC-containing appliances. Mattresses are fine — we route them through Connecticut's Bye Bye Mattress program separately. Hazardous waste needs to go to a CT DEEP HHW collection day or Westport's Household Hazardous Waste Program. Ask before you load if you're not sure.
