Black Rock Turnpike (Route 58) is Fairfield's most active commercial corridor — a state-maintained route running north-south through eastern Fairfield from the Bridgeport boundary up toward Trumbull. The corridor has retail centers, restaurants, small commercial buildings, and the surrounding Tunxis Hill residential neighborhood. The dumpster work mix here tilts heavily commercial — Fairfield's highest-volume commercial corridor — paralleling SoNo's role in Norwalk or Washington Boulevard's role in Stamford.
What's different about Black Rock Turnpike placement?
Three things define Black Rock Turnpike dispatches:
State route — CT DOT permits. Route 58 (Black Rock Turnpike) is state-maintained. Placements specifically in the state right-of-way along the Turnpike require a CT DOT Encroachment Permit instead of (not in addition to) the Town DPW permit. Most curbside commercial placements on the Turnpike fall under this case. Side-street curbside placements use Fairfield DPW.
Highest commercial volume in Fairfield. Tenant turnover, restaurant fitouts, retail flips run year-round. The pace is more like SoNo (Norwalk) or Stamford's office-corridor than the rest of Fairfield's residential-dominant neighborhoods.
Tunxis Hill multi-family. The residential blocks adjacent to the corridor have older multi-family stock — duplexes, triplexes, small apartment buildings. Single-unit and whole-building cleanouts run steadily.
Property-management coordination. Many Black Rock Turnpike commercial buildings have rear parking or service drives. When a non-curbside placement is possible via property-management approval, the placement is faster (no permit) and less disruptive.
Common Black Rock Turnpike / Tunxis Hill project types
A few patterns dominate dispatch logs:
- Retail flips. Tenant changes mean demo of old fitouts. 15-yard for single-tenant; 20-yard for deeper demo.
- Restaurant fitouts. Steady restaurant turnover along Black Rock Turnpike. Demo of FF&E, kitchen rip-out. 20-yard for most; 30/40-yard for deeper demo.
- Strip-mall and shopping-center work. Periodic facility upgrades. 30/40-yard with a swap schedule for larger projects.
- Tunxis Hill multi-family. Single-unit kitchen/bath renos: 15-yard. Whole-building scope: 20-yard.
- Tunxis Hill residential. Single-family kitchen and bath renos, basement cleanouts. Mid-century stock means drywall-era demo.
- Office and small commercial. Smaller-scale than the major retail/restaurant volume but real.
Streets and landmarks
Black Rock Turnpike (Route 58) is the spine. Tunxis Hill Road runs through the residential neighborhood adjacent to the corridor. Brewster Street, Black Rock Avenue, Fairfield Avenue, and Lalley Boulevard host residential and small-commercial properties on side blocks.
Landmarks: the Black Rock Turnpike retail corridor, Lake Mohegan (regional landmark just to the west), the Fairfield-Bridgeport line on the eastern edge of Tunxis Hill.
Sizing for Black Rock Turnpike projects

- 20-yard ($647) — multi-room tenant build-out, mid-size restaurant fitout demo, whole-building multi-family scope.
- 30/40-yard ($899) — full-floor commercial demo, larger restaurant gut, strip-mall facility work.
