Ponus Ridge is the northwestern New Canaan equivalent of Smith Ridge — the same large-lot estate character, the same multi-acre wooded properties, the same septic + well infrastructure to plan around at delivery. Ponus Ridge Road is the spine, running north-south through the western backcountry of New Canaan, parallel to (and west of) Smith Ridge Road. The neighborhood extends north toward the Westchester County NY border, where the New Canaan / Pound Ridge town line marks the secondary-service-area transition.

What's different about Ponus Ridge dumpster work?

Operationally, Ponus Ridge looks like Smith Ridge with slightly different housing texture:

Septic + well, mature canopy, sloped driveways. Same three Backcountry-style placement constraints as Smith Ridge. Property-layout walk before delivery is standard for any first-time placement.

Slightly more colonial-era estate stock. Where Smith Ridge has a meaningful concentration of mid-century modernist homes, Ponus Ridge tilts a bit more toward older colonial-era estate stock and traditional estate construction. Demo loads are heavier per yard on the older properties (plaster-and-lath, slate roofs, copper detail).

NY border proximity. Ponus Ridge runs north toward the Pound Ridge / Bedford / North Castle / Armonk Westchester County line. Cross-border dispatches between Ponus Ridge and the NY-side border towns are common.

Multi-week project timelines. Same as Smith Ridge — pre-war estate gut-rehabs and large landscape projects run weeks. Swap rotations are the norm.

Common Ponus Ridge project types

The dispatch pattern is similar to Smith Ridge with the housing-mix shift noted above:

• Pre-war estate gut-rehabs. Multi-week 30/40-yard swap schedules. Heavier per-yard demo than Smith Ridge averages because of the slightly higher proportion of older colonial-era estates. Stone foundations, plaster-and-lath, slate roofs.
• Whole-house cleanouts before sale. Multi-acre estates turning over. 30/40-yard for the volume; junk-removal crew for the heavy items.
• Modernist restoration. Less common than Smith Ridge but real — some Harvard Five-era properties on the Ponus Ridge side. Selective demo with 10- or 15-yard cans.
• Slate and copper roof tear-offs. More common than the New Canaan town-wide average because of the older estate stock.
• Pool and pool-deck demos. Older in-ground pools and surrounding decks. Concrete and pavers in 10-yards for weight; lumber in 20-yards.
• Large landscape projects at scale. Multi-acre properties generate hedge removals, mature-tree work, sod replacements, terrace rebuilds.

Streets and landmarks in Ponus Ridge

Ponus Ridge Road runs north-south as the main residential spine through northwestern New Canaan. Old Norwalk Road, Comstock Hill Road, Old Stamford Road, West Road, and Wahackme Road host residential housing on smaller (still acreage-scale) lots branching off the spine.

The neighborhood doesn't have signature commercial landmarks — Ponus Ridge is overwhelmingly residential. Waveny Park (south, off South Avenue) is the closest major public space. The Glass House and other modernist properties sit south and east of Ponus Ridge proper, in the Town Center direction. To the north, Ponus Ridge Road approaches the New Canaan / Pound Ridge line.

• 15-yard ($547) — single-room renovation, modernist multi-room selective demo.

Ponus Ridge placement notes

Ponus Ridge placements share the Smith Ridge constraints:

• Vertical clearance from mature trees. The biggest constraint. Walk the approach if photos look marginal.
• Slope. Cross-place the can on grade.
• Septic + well. Stay clear of leach fields and well caps.
• Long-driveway access for swap rotations. Plan swap windows around property daily-use patterns.
• Stonework and granite curbing. Higher-end estate driveways often have granite edging or paver fields. Always plank.

Permits for Ponus Ridge placements

Ponus Ridge is overwhelmingly private-driveway placements: no Town permit required. Exceptions:

• Curbside placements on Ponus Ridge Road or other public streets: permit from New Canaan DPW at (203) 594-3054. Rare here — driveways accommodate any size.
• State route placement: Ponus Ridge Road has portions that connect to state routes on the southern end. If a placement is in state right-of-way, the CT DOT Encroachment Permit applies.
• NY-border placements: if a placement is physically on the Westchester County NY side of the line (Pound Ridge, Bedford, etc.), it's a different jurisdiction. Westchester County permit rules apply, not New Canaan's.
