Shippan is the slim peninsula on Stamford's east side that points into Long Island Sound — older shoreline single-family homes on tight lots, mature landscaping running right up to the driveway edges, and tide-side properties where a wrong placement leaves wheel marks in lawn that takes a season to recover. We've been dropping roll-offs in Shippan since 2014. The pricing is the same as the rest of Stamford; the placement is the part that takes care.
What's different about Shippan dumpster placement?
Three things define Shippan dispatches:
Tight setbacks. Lots in Shippan run narrow and deep — driveways often start wide at the street and pinch as they approach the garage. A 20-yard rolls in, but only if the truck can pull straight. We frequently back-set the can closer to the street rather than push deep into the property. Less than ideal for the project workflow; better than scraping a stone wall.
Older landscaping right at the driveway edges. Boxwoods, hedges, mature rhododendrons. Shippan owners tend to landscape close to the asphalt, which means the placement margin is real. A delivery truck at 22 feet of vertical clearance and 10 feet of width needs the approach clear. If a hedge has grown into the lane, we walk it before the can comes off.
Older driveway surfaces. A lot of Shippan driveways are original to the home — sometimes asphalt, sometimes stone-edged, sometimes pavers laid 30 years ago. Pavers and stamped concrete should always be planked under the wheels and the heavy end. Asphalt takes a roll-off without protection. Stone-edged driveways need the can centered to keep wheel pressure off the stone.
Common Shippan project types
A few patterns repeat across Shippan dispatch logs:
- Estate cleanouts. Shippan's older single-family stock turns over generationally — homes that were built mid-century and held through a couple of owners now hit the market and the contents come out at once. A 20-yard for the dresser-mattress-boxes volume, plus a junk-removal crew for the heavy or awkward items (treadmills in basements with narrow stairs, the hot tub on the back deck, the workshop tools). We handle both halves so the property manager or executor isn't booking two vendors.
- Hot tub removals. Old shoreline decks frequently host hot tubs that have outlived the deck. Pull, drain, disassemble, haul. Often paired with a roll-off if the deck is coming out behind the spa.
- Deck demos. Shoreline decks weather hard. Pressure-treated, composite, even some old redwood — when they come down, the volume goes by yardage but the weight goes by what's underneath (concrete piers, footings). We size the can to the demo, not just the deck dimensions.
- Landscaping debris. Shippan landscaping projects generate volume — hedge removals, tree work, sod replacement. Yard waste is fine in a roll-off; some materials (large logs, root balls with soil) need a heads-up because the weight cap kicks in faster than expected.
- Kitchen and bath renovations. Same as the rest of Stamford — 15-yard for single-room, 20-yard for whole-floor. The Shippan twist is the placement constraints, not the project shape.
Streets and landmarks in Shippan we work regularly
Shippan Avenue is the main spine — it runs from Cummings Park out to the Point. Soundview Avenue, Magee Avenue, and Ocean Drive East branch off it. Saddle Rock Road, Cummings Point Road, and the side streets toward Cove Island Park (a Shippan-Cove edge) all see regular dispatch.
The point itself — Shippan Point — is the older estate-era stock, big lots, the most placement-sensitive driveways. Cummings Park sits at the north end, by Shippan Avenue's intersection with Magee. The peninsula is small enough that we know which driveways take which size — if you're not sure, ask when you book.
Sizing for Shippan projects
Same base rates as the rest of Stamford:
- 10-yard ($447) — small bath remodel, half-garage cleanout, landscaping debris from a yard project.
- 15-yard ($547) — single-room kitchen reno, basement cleanout in an older Shippan colonial, deck-demo lumber when the deck is coming out without footings.
- 20-yard ($647) — whole-house decluttering, full deck demo with footings, single-layer roof tear-off, estate-cleanout volume.
- 30/40-yard ($899) — large estate-property renovation, two-layer roof tear-off, gut-rehab on a larger Shippan home.

Permits for Shippan placements
The Shippan placement is almost always private property — driveway, lawn, sometimes paver pad. No permit required for that. The exceptions:
- Curbside placements on Shippan Avenue or one of the side streets, when the driveway can't fit the size you need. That's a Street Use (Obstruction) Permit from Stamford's Engineering Bureau. Rare in Shippan but not unheard of.
- HOA / association rules. Some private-road communities at the south end of the Point have their own driveway-use rules. Worth a check before you commit a placement.
The full Stamford permit logic is on the Stamford hub.
Dispatch timing for Shippan
Shippan is one of the closer Stamford neighborhoods to our Woodchuck Road depot — about 10–12 minutes drive, traffic depending. Same-day delivery is realistic if you call before 11 AM and the size you want is on the lot. Most weeks we have trucks running through Shippan multiple times.
For projects that span more than a week, ask about a swap schedule. We pull the full can and drop a fresh empty in the same Shippan placement.
